Spain regions checklist: how many of the 19 have you visited?

Spain has 19 regions once you count the two cities, and most people's Spain is about three of them. Catalonia for Barcelona, Madrid for Madrid, Andalusia for Seville and the sun. That's the classic trip, and it leaves sixteen regions you haven't seen, each with its own language, landscape and food.

Here's an easy way to see where you stand. Go through the 19 below, tick the ones you've been to, and see your number. Whatever you tick saves on this device, so you can come back and finish later.

Prefer to see it than list it? The free Spain regions visited map colors in every region you pick and shows your percentage, the same count in map form.

The checklist

All 19 are here, the seventeen autonomous communities plus the cities of Ceuta and Melilla. Tick the ones you've been to and your progress saves in your browser.

Green Spain, the north

Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Navarre and La Rioja. This is the wet, green, Atlantic Spain most first-timers never reach: the scallop-marked roads to Santiago, cider houses under the Picos de Europa, pintxos bars in San Sebastián, the running of the bulls in Pamplona, and the wine that made La Rioja a household name. Six regions along the top of the country, and most Spain lists have none of them.

The centre

Madrid, Castile and León, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Aragón. Madrid hands people the Community of Madrid without them noticing, and the rest is the vast interior: Burgos and León's cathedrals, Ávila's walls, Toledo and the windmills of Don Quixote country, the Roman theatres of Extremadura, and the Mudéjar towers of Aragón with the Pyrenees rising behind Zaragoza.

The Mediterranean east

Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Murcia and the Balearic Islands. Barcelona usually ticks Catalonia on a first trip, with the Costa Brava and Gaudí's spires. South of it, Valencia has oranges, paella and Las Fallas, Murcia its baroque cathedral and the huerta, and offshore the Balearics, Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, each its own holiday.

The south

Andalusia, big enough to be a trip of its own. Flamenco, ferias and Moorish palaces, Seville's Giralda, Granada's Alhambra, Córdoba's mezquita and the white villages of the sierras. It's the Spain of the postcards, and for a lot of people it's the whole country, so it gets ticked early and the other sixteen stay blank.

The islands and the African cities

The Canary Islands out in the Atlantic, volcanic and spring-warm all year under Mount Teide, and across the strait the two cities on the North African coast, Ceuta and Melilla, where Spain meets Morocco and the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. Three ticks that take a flight or a ferry each, and a very satisfying way to round out the map.

Quick note: Stampie is a small indie project made by people who love travel and collecting stamps. The region designs are our own, not official symbols or coats of arms. They're just a fun way to mark where you've been. 🗺️

The checklist and the map are a nice start, but they only live on this one device. To keep your regions for good, sync them across your phone and the web and line them up next to every country and city you've been to, that's what Stampie is for. Each region becomes a stamp in your journal, with your own photos and the dates you went, there whenever you want to look back.

So, how many of the 19 have you got?

FAQ

How many regions does Spain have? Spain has 17 autonomous communities, plus two autonomous cities on the North African coast, Ceuta and Melilla, which most people count too. That's 19 in total, and the checklist above covers all of them.

What's the difference between a community and a province in Spain? Autonomous communities are the top level, 17 of them (19 with the two cities). Provinces sit underneath, and there are 50, which is why a Spanish address names a province like Málaga or Girona. This checklist and the map work at the community level, so Seville counts as Andalusia and Barcelona as Catalonia.

Is there a free Spain regions checklist? Yes. The checklist above lets you tick off every region you've been to, saves your progress on your device, and needs no account. You can also download it as a printable PDF, or color your regions in on the free Spain regions visited map.

Can I download or print the Spain regions checklist as a PDF? Yes. Tick off your regions above and hit Download as PDF for a clean, printable page with a checkbox next to all 19 and your progress at the top.

Does driving through a region count? That's up to you. Some people only count a region where they stopped and did something, others count anywhere they set foot. Pick a rule and stick to it so your number always means the same thing. The drive from Madrid to Barcelona alone crosses three communities.

Which Spanish regions do most people miss? Extremadura, La Rioja, Cantabria and Murcia, along with the two African cities. They sit off the Barcelona to Madrid to Seville route, so most people finish several trips to Spain with those still blank.

What's the best way to track the Spanish regions you've visited? Something you can update in the moment beats a list you keep up from memory. Stampie turns each region into a stamp and fills in a Spain map as you go, synced across your phone and the web.

Behind Stampie

Ebru in Peru, 2023

The idea for Stampie started in Peru 🇵🇪, back in 2023. I’ve always loved collecting passport stamps, that small thrill of seeing a new one land at the border. On that trip they just waved me through. No stamp. A small thing, but it stuck with me.

Turns out a lot of countries have quietly stopped stamping. A couple of years later I built the first version of Stampie for a hackathon, somewhere to keep that little ritual alive even when the ink doesn’t come. A passport-style journal for anyone who still wants this souvenir from every trip.

It quietly found its way to people. As an indie team, we keep working on Stampie in coffee breaks, on weekends, and from wherever the next trip takes us.
