The United Kingdom is four nations, and this is the shortest checklist on the site. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Most people who have been to the UK have one or two, quite a few have three, and the fourth one is almost always the same one.

England

The one everybody has. London does most of the work, and a lot of people never get past it, which is a shame when Bath, York, Cornwall, the Lake District and the Cotswolds are a couple of hours out on a train. If you flew into Heathrow or Gatwick, this one is already ticked.

Scotland

Edinburgh and the castle, Glasgow, the Highlands, Skye, Loch Ness and the North Coast 500. The sleeper train from London gets you there overnight, and the east coast line does it in under five hours, which is why Scotland is the second tick for most people.

Wales

Snowdonia, the Pembrokeshire coast, Cardiff, and more castles per square mile than anywhere else in Europe. It's right next to England, a couple of hours from London or Manchester, and still the one people are surprised they've never actually stopped in.

Northern Ireland

Belfast, the Giant's Causeway, the Mourne Mountains and the Antrim coast. It's a short flight or a ferry from Great Britain, and it's the fourth tick for nearly everyone, because it's the only one you can't reach by train from London. Worth knowing: the Republic of Ireland is a separate country, not part of the UK, so a trip to Dublin doesn't tick this box.

How many nations are there in the UK? Four: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England, Scotland and Wales together make up Great Britain, and adding Northern Ireland makes the United Kingdom. The checklist above covers all four.

Is Ireland part of the UK? No. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, and the Republic of Ireland is an independent country with its own government and currency. They share the island and an open border, which is why the two get mixed up so often. Only Northern Ireland counts on this list.

What about the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey? They're Crown Dependencies, not part of the UK, so they aren't among the four here. They're lovely, they just belong on a different list.
